Extempore Playing
An introduction may be played to suggest the opening phrase, with a semicadence:
At the conclusion of the whole a postlude may be played in a similar manner, but ending with a full cadence:
Exercise 33.
(a)   Take the hymn-tune 'St Ann' (O God, our help); play it through. Then invent several preludes in the style shown in the illustrations, concluding each with a semi-cadence.
(b)   Play postludes suitable to the same tune, ending now with a full cadence, and using the plagal form occasion­ally. Introduce sequences, varied repetitions, and other interesting devices..
(c)' Play, similarly, interludes for insertion between the verses.
(d) Take the following chant by Farrant and invent preludes and postludes to it in accordance with the direc­tions and models.
(e) Choose any of your favorite hymns and chants, and work at preludes, interludes and postludes for them.
